How to Download Large Files Using an Unstable Internet Connection

Satellite Internet is sometimes called a burst-speed internet in the sense that it concerns data on demand basis. That is, your computer sometimes does not maintain constant communication with your ISP. Instead, it collects information only when necessary. This became a very big problem especially when a very large file downloads that can range from movies to entire operating systems like Ubuntu or Mandrake Linux, where several hours of continuous connection required.

Satellite Internet can withstand continuous connection, however, even for a short period. Furthermore, capping off size is sometimes a problem especially in highly congested networks. However, here are two ways to go about it.

First, you can use a download manager. Download managers have the ability to resume downloads from where the computer got turned off. In short, picks up where you last left off. This is very useful because it allows you to avoid having to start the process of downloading all the parts, if intermittent connection.

There are two types of download manager - freeware and non-freeware. Some people claim to have purchased the software is better. However, from experience, the difference is very negligible, if not nonexistent. Perhaps, internet subscription for my computer to speed caps before any difference is visible.

Second, you can also use a torrent manager. Torrents work differently than regular download. Instead of downloading a large file from one source, you will take the pieces of files from multiple locations. This allows you to get around the size cap because instead of the file registration as a big glob, it instead shows up as several small, bite-sized files, so you can avoid downloading files discriminating detectors provider.

There are many popular torrent managers, the most popular BitTorrent and uTorrent (the Greek letter is not his Roman letter mu). Both are free and no spyware. You also have the option of using alternative programs, it all depends on you. By now I was able to download the 600MB or so Ubuntu Linux OS distribution with only one attempt, as opposed to around 12 fantastic tries through direct download.

Yes, I know. It's a miracle!
