where to start?
Well, you're probably reading this from a Windows based machine, so I will elaborate on Ubuntu. Ubuntu is backed by Canonical, the company founded by Mark Shuttleworth, South African-born multi-millionaire, so he started reception, internet security certification company. Linux is based off of Unix, which was the first widely used operating system (OS) and has its roots in 1970.

Fuelled with their supporters, Ubuntu is at the top of the list of Linux distributions over night. Ubuntus slogan is "Linux for Human Beings", which gives the essence of what the project aims to achieve: to get normal people to use Linux. This is not an easy task with Microsoft dominates the PC OS market for more than twenty years.

Ubuntu is fighting its corner, however, with its easy-to-use interface with Gnome and it's file system from Nautilus (both open-source projects, like Ubuntu). Ubuntu is all built from the ground up, which makes it attractive for business, "local authorities and the average user.

Did you like the Firefox web browser?
If you're one of over 100 million people who do not. Firefox is built right into Ubuntu, the Evolution Mail (like Outlook Express). In fact, Ubuntu has a lot of what the everyday needs of users can burn a DVD, CD, play all your media and much more. These were built in the possibility of a compact disc that makes Ubuntu special.

Will replace Windows?
The direct answer is no. If you're like me, have a lot of commercial (paid-for) software, then Ubuntu can not use them. The exception to this rule is some games such as Doom and Quake that people are re-engineered to run in Ubuntu. In most cases it should not matter as Ubuntus loads of software to work for you.

It's worth a try though, even if you do not have a CD burner, Canonical (the company behind Ubuntu) will ship to you, without cost, you pay nothing! It is also cheaper to ship more than one CD, so you'll get copies for distribution.

The future of open-source
Who knows? The future looks bright with Ubuntu knocking down the inhibitions that people have of Linux. Linux has always been popular in the Universitys, where all good ideas begin! Whether Linux will prevail Microsoft? I doubt in the near future as the Windows has exclusive distribution deals with every major manufacturer of personal computers, the Windows default option. It's not every monopoly is, however, and Firefox is an indication of the future.
